The police in Nairobi have dispersed a group of Nasa MP elects who were headed to Kibra in solidarity with their protesting supporters.

The MPs, led by Rarieda MP elect Otiende Amollo told journalists at a press conference that they would drive to Kibra.

The MPs were addressing the media calling on the police to “stop the killings” but it has emerged that the police have since stopped the procession.

The presser started with Kibra MP Ken Okoth briefing the media that his “constituents have a constitutional right to protest.”

Amollo, who read out the group’s statement, said all Kenyans should be allowed to “peacefully demonstrate and the government and police must recognize that right.”

He went on to state that the MPs have received reports of police killings in different parts of the country.

When asked to substantiate their claims, the MPs said they have been in touch with some of their affected constituents who lost relatives.

Homa Bay town MP Peter Kaluma told journalists that police shot dead protesters in his constituency on Friday night.

Asked why they were terming people who were looting as peaceful protesters, the legislators said police ought to arrest law breakers, not kill them.
