Uhuru Kenyatta is the winner of the Tuesday presidential election.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati declared Mr Kenyatta “duly elected president” of Kenya shortly after 10:15pm.

Moments before the announcement, Nasa co-principal Musalia Mudavadi had declared that the coalition will not be party to Mr Chebukati’s declaration.

Asked if the commission had informed them if the tallying process had been concluded, Mr Mudavadi responded thus; “They say they have not finished and whatever is left to them is now not significant to the outcome, that means they have concluded what they want.”

President Kenyatta garnered 8,203,290 votes (54.27 per cent) beating his close challenger Raila Odinga of Nasa who managed 6,762,224, representing 44.74 per cent.

Mr Chebukati made the announcement at the commission’s National Tallying Centre at the Bomas of Kenya. He will rule for the next five years with William Ruto as his deputy.

The President, who vied on a Jubilee ticket, was all smiles as the announcement was made in front of dignitaries among them Mr Ruto, envoys, cabinet secretaries and elected officials.

His supporters in Gatundu, KICC and other parts of the country broke into song and dance shortly after the announcement, even as tension gripped Mr Odinga’s strongholds.

Accompanied by his deputy, he made the short drive from the Kenyatta International Convent Centre to Bomas of Kenya, minutes to the announcement.

Nasa has disputed the results claiming that their candidate won the election.
