EXCAVATION: Kenya has jumped 16 places to position 86 from 102 in the most attractive global mining destinations, according to a survey by a Canadian institution of higher learning, the Fraser Institute.

Mining Cabinet secretary, Dan Kazungu yesterday said ministry projections show that Kenya can jump over 30 places to position 50 globally in the next one year, if a 20-year sector control strategy is implemented.

During a joint press conference with Democratic Republic of Congo, Budget Minister, Pierre Mbayi at the ministry boardroom, Kazungu highlighted on ‘six pack initiative’ which will ultimately comprise six key documents that provide mining players with information they need to make informed investment decisions.

“Mining is a multi-trillion sector that can transform any economy in a very short time when fully explored and exploited. What we need is an enabling environment in the sector to implement a 20-year strategy, a well thought legal and policy regime programme among other important legislations,” said Kazungu.

It includes a 20-year strategy paper, he said. The strategy paper according to the CS outlines how Kenya plans to uplift her mining sector through implementation of the Mining Act 2016, the mining and minerals policy - which provides guidance on the conduct of mining and development activities in the country, among others.

He said the strategy also touches on environmental issues, local value addition, post-mine closure activities, mainstream, artisanal and small-scale mining.
