Kenya Railway Corporation will from tomorrow start two inter-county trains that will stop to pick and drop commuters in seven terminus along the Mombasa to Nairobi route. This will supplement the two Madaraka Express trains that started offering services on June 1 when the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) was officially launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The two trains — travelling both directions — are scheduled to make stopovers at Mariakani, Miaseny, Voi, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi, Emali and Athi River, stretching the journey to six hours. While passengers in the express trains have been paying Sh700 for economy train rides between the cities and Sh3,000 for first class ride, fares for the inter-county trains are varied depending on one’s departure and drop-off points.

A passenger will pay Sh50 from Mombasa to Mariakani, Sh130 to Miasenyi, Sh210 to Voi, Sh370 to Mtito Andei, Sh440 to Kibwezi, Sh530 to Emali and Sh690 to Athi River and finally Sh700 to Nairobi’s Syokiamu terminus. Commuters will part with Sh50 from Syokimau to Athi River, Sh190 to Emali, Sh290 to Kibwezi, Sh360 to Mtito Andei, Sh510 to Voi, Sh590 to Miasenyi, Sh690 to Mariakani and Sh700 to Miritini, the last terminal in the route.  Fares between the various terminus have also been provided in the new schedule.

Later in the year KRC will introduce a cargo train that will drop the price of hauling containers from Mombasa to Nairobi to Sh50,000, down from Sh100,000. The introduction of two inter-county trains will push the number of passengers using the SGR trains from the current capacity of 1,260 up to 2,520 passengers daily. KRC has also introduced easy booking and payment of fares through M-Pesa.
