Busia County Government has set aside Sh16 million in the 2018/19 financial year to revive Mulwanda cotton ginnery in Samia sub-county which collapsed years ago due to financial mismanagement, a government official has revealed.

Speaking when she toured the facility County Executive Committee (CEC) member for industrialisation Judy Maketso called on the residents to rally behind the revival.

“Busia county needs investors and this can only be realised if the money meant to initiate projects is utilised for intended purpose,” said Maketso adding that the department will work closely with the seven affiliated primary societies.

Co-operatives chief officer Nelson Kwamini said the revival of the ginnery should be a collective responsibility pointing out that all stakeholders need to work together to ensure there is enough material when the ginnery becomes operational.

The societies group chairman Vincent Lumumba said 600 kilograms of cotton seeds will be supplied for planting between June and August. Lumumba urged farmers to spare at least one acre of land to plant cotton which will be supplied to the ginnery when they harvest the crop.

He appealed to both levels of government to educate more farmers on cotton growing in time for the opening of Mulwanda ginnery adding that there is need for the county government to develop demonstration plots to enrich farmer’s knowhow on cotton planting.

People Daily has established that most of the cotton ginneries in Busia County collapsed due to financial mismanagement by officials as well as migration of Asians, who manned the facilities, to Uganda due to an unfavorable operating environment.
