Business Daily Kenya:

Environment Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu.

The Government expects to boost forestry sub-sector contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP) beyond the current one per cent. Environment Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu said work is already going on with Kenya Forestry Research Institute (Kefri) to achieve this.

She said the government will rely on the institution not only to achieve the 10 per cent forest cover envisaged in the Constitution and Vision 2030 but also to help contribute to growing the economy.

Prof Wakhungu said during its 30 years of existence, Kefri has undertaken research projects that have generated technologies in the fields of forest management, utilisation, rehabilitation, conservation and preservation.

The CS said during a ceremony to mark the institution’s 30 years of service at its campus in Muguga, in Kiambu County that forests provide various benefits to the country.

Forests, she said, provides basic subsistence for more than a quarter of the population, with those who live near them using its products like timber, fuelwood, bush foods and medicinal plants, partly for subsistence purposes and for income generation.

According to Forestry Society of Kenya, it is estimated that annual charcoal production stands at 1.6 million tonnes, generating about Sh32 billion ($427 million), almost equivalent to Sh35 billion ($467 million) from tea industry.

Wakhungu said using available research at Kefri, the Ministry is working with county governments, farmers and other stakeholders to promote forestry programmes across the 47 devolved units to improve the livelihoods of people.
