Nzoia sugar company has closed down over lack of raw material and huge debts that have hit the factory. The miller has not produced sugar for three weeks following acute sugar cane shortage. Nzoia Public Relations Manager Gilbert Awino said they had closed down for lack of raw material and money for maintenance .

“We have closed down because we don’t have cane both in our nucleus and out growers but we hope things will normalise soon,’’ he said. The officer said the company was also awaiting Sh300 million promised to the company by the national government as bailout.

This comes in the wake of demonstrations by cane famers around the factory yesterday over fake molasses sold to them. Famers accused the firm of diluting molasses with water due to high demand.

Awino, however, refuted the claims saying the problem had been caused by a technical hitch. The company has also not paid farmers for cane delivered for the past three months.
