Government in partnership with National Oil is set to distribute approximately 1.2 million gas cylinders starting next month. The cylinders will be sold at subsidised prices of up to 60 per cent, making it affordable to the common mwananchi.

According to National Oil corporate affairs manager Zeddy Sambu, the project will be rolled out in phases. The first batch will be distributed to 18 counties among them Murang’a Kirinyaga, Embu, Bungoma and Siaya.

“We shall distribute approximately 440,000 cylinders in the first round and gradually increase the number as we reach out to other regions” she said Sambu said the programme aims at footing the upfront cost of acquiring a gas cylinder and its accessories whose cost is relatively high.

“The programme shall target people who have never owned a gas cylinder as we seek to increase use of cooking gas across the country” she said. Sambu however said after acquiring the cylinder, the refilling cost will be at the normal market price.

Using cooking gas as the most preferred source of cooking energy especially in the rural areas, Sambu said, will help reduce deforestation.

She pointed out that most of these counties have suffered massive forest destruction. The company will put up a distribution centres in the targeted counties where community based groups will be used as distributing agents.

“For one to acquire the cooking gas they have to register with the administration” she said. The groups shall earn Sh30 per cylinder they collect and take for refilling at designated points.
