More than 7,000 customers have so far travelled between Mombasa and Nairobi on the new Standard Gauge Railwat (SGR) passenger train service dubbed Madaraka Express, a senior official has said.

Kenya Railways (KR) Managing Director, Atanas Maina said over the last week the corporation has experienced a daily surge in passenger numbers. He said the growing numbers demonstrate the vital role the company plays in the country’s transportation system, adding: “We are definitely off to a strong start.”

With demand for the services at an all-time high, Maina stressed the organisation is looking forward to scheduling additional trains. “The combination of state-of-the-art design, unrivalled comfort and convenience means that we are well placed to meet the growing demand as passengers increasingly opt for our services over other existing means,” he added.

The first phase of the SGR service launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta last Wednesday, is currently operating with scheduled passenger trains from Nairobi and Mombasa running on a daily basis.

In addition to growing passenger numbers, Kenya Railways also announced that plans are under way to introduce the inter-county trains that will make stops at Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito, Voi, Miasenyi and Mariakani before the final stop at Miritini. The train is scheduled to start operations by July. KR and the operator China Roads and Bridges Corporation, have a joint team to address customer service issues. - KNA
