The government has admitted that despite remarkable advancements in the agricultural sector, investments in technology, climate smart agriculture, data production and access by farmers is still a challenge.

Consequently, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich has called on development partners to mobilise financial investments in support of data, generate opportunities for building capacity of farmers to use it, and improve policy coordination within governments.

He also called on the development partners to provide a clear understanding on how governments can take up innovations by the youth within the public sector.

Rotich was speaking at the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) Conference in Nairobi on Wednesday. The meeting attracted over 100 ministers of agriculture from across the world including representatives of the academia sector, policy makers and researchers.

He expressed hope the meeting would propose policies that would go towards improving coordination of data for agriculture and nutrition across Governments, private sector, and academia.

“We hope it will also provide a platform for peer-learning, share of expertise and practices on proven success on use of quality data and standards on agriculture and nutrition,” Rotich said.

His Agriculture counterpart, Willy Bett said use of reliable agricultural data for planning, decision-making and informed actions is critical in transforming agricultural sector.
