Shelf prices of food commodities are yet to decrease despite supply boost from external and internal sources. Milk and sugar supplies have reasonably increased in the last one month but consumers are yet to enjoy the benefits of the quantities upsurge.

In a supermarket that People Daily visited yesterday, prices of sugar are yet to decrease despite an increase in supply. Within supermarkets in Nairobi Central Business District a 2kg packet of sugar from local millers and ones packaged by the retailers is going for between Sh350 and Sh390.

In estates, shopkeepers are selling the same quantity at more than Sh400 which is beyond reach of majority of Kenyans owing to depressed purchasing power.

Sugar directorate interim head Solomon Odera yesterday on phone confirmed that supplies both from external and local sources have increased since early May and the situation is set to improve further before the end of the month.

“We have witnessed increased supply of sugar in the local market and thus consumers have plenty to access. More imports are still expected in the country in the coming weeks and it is likely we will have surplus this month which will be carried to next month,” said Odera.

Odera stated, in the next two months, once supplies are stable, prices will decrease to between Sh110 and Sh115 per kilogramme. Kenya Dairy Processors Association chairman Nixon Sigei yesterday confirmed that milk production has increased by 20 per cent since onset of long rains.

Though he added that the industry is yet to recover from effects of prolonged drought. A half litre packet of processed milk is currently retailing at Sh50 down from between Sh60 and Sh65 about a month ago.
