Farmers from Kuresoi and Molo in Nakuru have been invaded by a new potato pest even as maize farmers continue to grapple with armyworm attacks.

The pest believed to be Colorado potato beetle is said to chew all the leaves on a potato plant leaving it to dry. According to Rahab Wambui a potato farmer from Kuresoi, she at first thought potato leaves were chomped by chickens and wild birds.

“I visited the land and to my surprise, potato plants had no leaves. I thought they had been attacked by birds,” she said. The outbreak comes as Nakuru County faces maize production crisis with over 800,000 acres affected by army worms.

Agriculture extension officers have advised farmers to spray Ortran pesticide to contain the worms attack. “We are in shock because we are going to suffer greatly if the attack will not be addressed fast,” Wambui added.

Another farmer Naomi Wanjiru narrated how her potato plantation was not spared and over 30 worms were on a single plant chewing all leaves. “We raised alarm and agriculture extension officers came to our rescue and guided us on the type of pesticide to spray,” she said.
