Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) plans to install more scanners at Mombasa port to enable 100 per cent cargo. This will help eliminate smuggling of contraband, tax evasion and theft of cargo at the facility.

“We are working towards 100 per cent scanning of cargo by installing more scanners,” KRA Chief Manager in charge of Operations in Southern Region John Bisonga said. He added that the non-destructive methods of inspecting would also be deployed at the dry ports to help curb revenue loss.

The scanners will complement smart readers for containers, smart gates technology already installed at the entry points at the Kilindini harbour. KRA is also in the final stages of rolling out a new integrated Customs Management System (iCMS) to replace Simba platform which has been rendered obsolete.

The custom management system meant to provide solutions to various perennial cargo clearance inefficiencies and enhance revenue collection procedures at the port will be put to test by the end of this month.

Bisonga explained that the new measures being introduced will help eliminate previous loopholes which used to exist under the simba custom system. “After the piloting we will roll it out and it is expected that the system will completely change the way we do business as it will make things easier for everyone,” he said.
