Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is determined to avert a maritime disaster as it races to salvage a vessel stranded off Kilifi Coast.

The vessel, MT Theresa Arctic, carrying some 46,000 tonnes of crude vegetable oil ran aground about 55 nautical miles north of Mombasa while sailing from Port Kelang in Malaysia a week ago.

The salvage operation got a boost after arrival of a sister vessel MT Theresa Dumai which is expected to transship the vegetable oil before the ill-fated ship is pulled back into deep waters.

A salvage team comprising KPA staff and two private companies; Alpha Logistics and Smit International which are providing expertise in ship towage services. KPA has provided four tug boats for the salvage operation.

Efforts to salvage the Tuvalu-flagged vessel have been hampered by low tides and there has been fear of a looming an environmental disaster if there is spillage.

KPA tug boats have been holding onto MT Theresa Arctic on her tow line pulling towards high waters to stop the vessel from being washed at a reef near Kilifi creek.

The Head of Marine Operations Capt William Ruto said MT Theresa Dumai has begun loading part of the vegetable oil from the ill-fated MT Theresa Arctic before towing of the ship begins.

“We are making every effort to salvage the vessel and there is no cause for alarm, the vessel which arrived yesterday will transfer part of the oil so as to make the ill-fated ship lighter for towage,” he said.
