Kenya farmers will diversify flower exports to Asia and Far East region. Kenya Flower Council Chief executive Jane Ngige yesterday confirmed local flower farming community targets China, Russia and Australia in their new export diversification approach.

However, China market charges four per cent duty which Ngige said the government has to engage Chinese government to zero rate it. “We are appealing to our government to reach out to the Chinese government so that they can agree on duty-free exports. Otherwise it will cost local flower exporters a lot of money to access the market,” she said.

Ethiopia export duty free to the Chinese market. Ngige said interest in Kenya flowers follows China Flower Trade Fair in Guangzhou where some local flower companies exhibited their product.

She made the remarks during the opening of the three-day 2017 International Flower Trade Expo in Westlands. “We are equally interested in deepening our foot print in the larger Asian market,” Ngige said.

Kenya currently exports flowers to Japan duty free. The industry returned Sh70.8 billion in 2016 recording an 8.9 per cent increase from the previous year.

Kenya also plans to start exporting flowers to United States once direct flights kick off. The country controls 40 per cent of cut flowers exported to European markets. Over 300 exhibitors, drawn from other African countries, USA, European Union and Asia are attending the three day event.
